Hypertrophy is an increase and growth of muscle cells. Hypertrophy refers to an increase in muscular size achieved through exercise. When you work out, if you want to tone or improve muscle definition, lifting weights is the most common way to increase hypertrophy. The benefits of hypertrophy training are increased muscle size and strength, improved physical appearance (aesthetics), better physical performance, a healthier body, and numerous mental benefits. A hypertrophy phase workout consists of exercises utilizing low to intermediate repetition ranges with progressive overload. An example of this is 3-5 sets of 6-12 repetitions, performing the barbell chest press at 75-85% of the one repetition maximum (1 RM) with a rest period of 1-2 minutes.
